Meet Matt Tyssee

I’m a clinician of Soulful Serenity Mental Health Counseling Services.

This isn’t just a business; it’s a reflection of what we believe in & the high standard of care we strive to achieve each day. I provide affirming, client-centered virtual therapy for adolescents, couples, & families navigating anxiety, neurodivergence, identity exploration, burnout, and relationship challenges across Elmira, Ithaca, New York City & New York State at large.

My Take on Our Approach to Care

Many adolescents, young adults, couples, and families reach out for therapy when anxiety, burnout, identity questions, relationship stress, or life transitions begin to feel overwhelming. You may feel emotionally exhausted, disconnected from yourself, struggling to manage expectations, or unsure how to move forward. For neurodivergent individuals especially, constantly adapting to systems that were not built with you in mind can create chronic stress, self-doubt, and emotional fatigue. Therapy can provide a space to slow down, process what you’ve been carrying, and build a path forward that feels more sustainable and authentic.

I work with adolescents, young adults, couples, and families navigating anxiety, neurodivergence, identity exploration, relationship challenges, burnout, and major life changes. My style is collaborative, adaptable, and grounded in compassion. Clients often appreciate that therapy with me feels genuine, affirming, and tailored to who they are rather than forcing them into a one-size-fits-all approach. Together, we focus on identifying patterns that are no longer serving you while building practical tools, confidence, and emotional resilience.

As a queer, neurodivergent clinician with a background in special education, disability advocacy, and public health, I bring both professional and lived experience into the therapy space. I have spent over a decade supporting individuals with disabilities and several years working in public health during the COVID-19 crisis. Those experiences deepened my understanding of systemic stress, emotional overwhelm, caregiving fatigue, and the very real impact that uncertainty and injustice can have on mental health and relationships.

My approach to therapy is flexible and client-centered, drawing from DBT, CBT, Gestalt therapy, family systems work, and parts work. I believe meaningful progress happens when therapy is responsive to the individual sitting in the room. Some clients come to sessions needing structure and coping tools, while others need space to process emotions, relationships, identity, or the challenges of navigating the world as a neurodivergent person. Therapy should support your goals, your needs, and your pace.

I strive to create a space where clients feel respected, understood, and safe enough to show up fully as themselves. Whether you are working through anxiety, identity concerns, burnout, relationship struggles, neurodivergence, or major life transitions, therapy can help you reconnect with your strengths and move toward a more grounded, connected version of yourself.

If you are looking for an affirming and collaborative therapist who values authenticity, resilience, and growth, I would be honored to support you on your journey.
